2004-01-12 9:54 PM Iolanthe I can't help it. I don't know how many of you are Gilbert and Sullivan fans, but I am, and I saw Iolanthe the other night. At the end, Parliament has passed a bill saying that henceforth peerages will be given out by competitive examination. The House of Lords decides as a body to give up the mortal realm and join the fairy world. Because, as one peer says, "If lordships are to be determined by merit, we are of no earthly use whatsoever."
