me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Assisi accordions

Every third building in Assisi is a church. Or was a church. For the last few nights a very small one, deconsecrated years ago, has been hosting performances by students in a master class program that brings young artists from many countries to study in Assisi. We went last night, heard some wonderful singing (remember the name Eduardo Miletti) and a few too many clarinets. I wasn't planning to go again tonight, just to head up into the piazza for some pink grapefruit gelato -- which was wonderful -- but as I and my gelato buddies were strolling aimlessly back through the cool, quiet streets we found ourselves in front of this same ex-church. The door was open, so we peeked in and found an accordion sextet about to go on. Whether these six accordion players came to Assisi separately and formed a sextet when they met, or whether they applied and got accepted as a group, I don't know, though I love the idea of the latter. In any case, they were terrific. They played Piazzolla, Bach, Brahms, and Rimsky-Korsakov. Yes they did. They looked like they were having a wonderful time. Almost as good a time as we had, standing in the doorway, our hands sticky from gelato.
