The morning weather report said "some rain."

The reality was LOTS of rain, as well as thunder etc.

The streets at Tulane quickly went into flood mode. (They do this in a heavy fog.) I was glad I'd parked on the high side of the street, as I watched the water quickly fill what passes for gutters. Crossing the road became quite a challenge. Most people just sort of gritted their teeth and waded. One guy looked at the water, then at his car, then at the center of the road (which was dry.) Next thing I saw was him slithering across the hood of his car. Well, he didn't get his feet/shoes wet.

When we had a sun break I looked at the clock, analyzed the situation, then took off my socks, rolled up my slacks, and waded through the 6" deep water. At least I didn't have to manage an umbrella at the same time.

A couple of young women looked out at the rain (during one of its torrential periods) then ducked into the Ladies' room and came out with instant raincoats. There are several boxes of trash bin liners stored in there.

In addition to all of this, it turned out that the Center was more or less closed today. And will be closed again Monday.

The vent work (whatever that is) has reached the stage where the air is being exhausted through a Rube Goldberg-like arrangement of noisy pumps and huge vents. When I got in this morning there was a bit of a smoky smell in the lobby, but not in the library. And then I found out that work had been more or less cancelled for today. And Monday. There's a huge fan (about 5 feet square) in the lobby and the doors were propped open until it began raining.

The secretary filled me in on what was going on, and he left about noon.

When I finally did leave I was a bit concerned that I'd overtake the eastbound storm system. However, it had enough of a head start that the only clue it had been there was the fog over Lake Pontchartrain.

Only two cats greeted me outside this afternoon--last night's visitor was nowhere in sight.

And I have a nice long weekend to look forward to. I do hope the rain has passed us.
