Taking a five day weekend leaves me a bit at sea as to what day of the week it is. Good thing I have a daily calendar next to the monitor.

Today is Friday.

I got some more weeding done along the driveway. Although I had two cats supervising (Lady and Emma) I managed to not fall off the chair today. The Soothanol(tm) really seems to help. My ambulatory apparatus hasn't felt this good in a long time. I'm actually looking forward to more weeding tomorrow. And trimming back the dead stuff in the azaleas.

Most of the dead stuff is related to Katrina. We didn't actually flood, but there was a surge from the bayou at the end of the road that was about six inches deep under the house. And the house is on the highest part of the property. The water obviously went down quickly, based on the evidence.

After filling the trash barrel as full as possible I decided to dump it tomorrow and go to PJ's and read. It was quiet there--things were very slow and I got a lot done.

Tomorrow should be more of the same--the weather forecast is for pleasant weaather.

This evening's news reported that some of the gates to the Bonne Carre Spillway would be opened to handle the extra water coming down the Mississippi from the Missouri floods. Levees are still being repaired, and they don't want to take any chances on them being weakened by high water in the river.

The Spillway is a huge area that becomes a lake when the gates are opened. The "gates" are a series of pilings that can be removed easily. I'm not sure when the Spillway was created, but it was likely a result of the 1927 floods. (There's a great book about the 1927 flood--I think the author is Jason Berry, or something like that. "1927 flood" is in the title. I'm too lazy to look it up myself.)

Oh--Bonne Carre is pronounced "Bonnie Carry."

That's it for today.
