Oil Spill footage.

A definite MESS!!!

It is really unnerving to see this huge mass of oil moving inexorably to the coast--and the marshes that help protect the land from storm surges.

And then there are those who are supposed to Plan Ahead and Think of All Possible Consequences to actions.

Yes, that mile long tube that BP finally got in place is delivering 5000 gallons a day to tankers. But there's still at LEAST that much more that isn't being trapped by the Rube Goldberg "fixes."

And--oil dispersants are being released under water which have not been tested for their effect on marine life.

Are we creating a Dead Gulf?

Oh--and there are disturbing signs that at least some of the oil is going to connect with Atlantic currents that go up the East Coast.

The scary part is that the oil industry is not the only one that has managed to be poorly regulated. False confidence can lead to poor decisions. And other than the Exxon Valdez and a few others, there haven't been many potentially world-affecting disasters that are man-made, such as this one.

Enough. As a long-time science fiction reader I am wondering if there is any fiction with a disaster such as this as a basis--one in which long-term effects are hypothesized.

Other than the news about the oil deluge, nothing much has gone on today. The goop the doctor prescribed for the sore seems to be helping. That is good!
