. . . it's been quiet. But then it's not dark yet.

Maybe they used up all the noisemakers last night? I doubt that I am that lucky.

At one point, early in the (noise) bombardment, I saw Spots leading several raccoons off to some place hopefully less noisy. I've seen other evidence that he does not seem to have any big species hangups. The raccoons are about his size and I guess he is just being helpful.

This afternoon I was sitting on the porch for a few minutes when a raccoon poked its head inside and gave me a really mournful "is there any food?" look.

His body language was all I needed. I took the hint and got out the cat chow.

CC is much more of a homebody, but then she was shelter-raised for about a year before I went there looking for a black cat, found one, and then saw the mournful expression on CC's face--they'd been friends and shelter-mates for about a year.

And after Lady (her shelter sister) disappeared, I think CC went out and found a replacement in Spots. She's used to having several critters around, and it seems that Spots and the raccoons fill the bill.

Today was a not-much-of-anything day around the house and around the city.

The Essence music festival is going strong, so there are lots of visitors.

This evening there will be a battle of the barges (in the river) fireworks display. It should be quite something. And a bunch of other displays. Slidell is having one, but I have little interest in going by myself.

When I was growing up in New Jersey (Nutley) there was a big display of (mostly) set pieces in the "Oval." This was an arena for school football games, and various outdoor civic events. It was across the street from the high school, and sort of next door to the junior high school--which had once been the high school.

Firecrackers were NOT sold to individuals--a safety precaution in a town that had maybe about a dozen undeveloped building lots when we left in 1957.

Just about everywhere we have lived--other than California--has had fairly relaxed firecracker purchase laws.

Maybe I'll be lucky tonight and the cracker-crazies will get their jollies at the city display.

The critters and I would really like that.
