Here it is October--the eighth month, if you go by the first syllable. September is 7th, October 8th, etc.

I'm not too sure when people spread it out to 12 months by adding the months at the beginning of the year, and figuring that in a couple of generations or so hardly anyone would question the tenth month beginning with a syllable that means 8, etc.

One of these days when I have nothing better to to I'll try to find out if the same numerical misnaming of the months is present in other languages.

Weather today was lovely--clear and mild. I didn't quite get around to lighting the furnace pilot, but as long as I remember to close windows it shouldn't be a serious problem in the morning.

The cats have their own door so they can continue to go in and out at will.

I think the raccoons have moved on to winter quarters--there weren't any waiting for a handout this evening. They have, however, taken their dishes with them. I'm sure they will be disappointed when they realize that the dishes get magically filled only when they are on my front porch.

It was a day of doing this and that, and in the late afternoon I decided that it would be a good idea to see if WalMart had Special Kitty back on the shelves.

They did!! and I stocked up accordingly. They changed the label design, but the price is where it was before.

So--October is starting off in a fairly orderly manner--with the cat food once again available.

The only "different" thing was a note in the mailbox telling me I have a certified letter at the post office.

Because my current carrier doesn't deliver my mail till after noon, the letter will have to wait till Monday. I plan on making a negative comment about the late daily delivery while I'm there.

I just figured out what the letter probably is--post-season Saints stuff. If it is I shall point out that bringing the letter up to my door (especially when my car was parked in front of the house) would have been a thoughtful and more efficient way to deliver it.

It's cooling down nicely this evening--I'll bet I have a cat blanket tonight.
