2003-06-09 7:18 PM Have you ever noticed how ridiculously conservative and stereotypical greeting cards are? Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (1) I went to the store yesterday to buy a Dad's day card and ended up having to buy a "Dad from Son" card because all the "from Daughter" ones were dumb jokes about "don't worry, I'm not mistreating my car". The one I bought was about watching sports together. Right now I could probably name six or seven women who would love to buy a card like that for their father. Why isn't this card gender neutral? For that matter, why weren't any of the Mom's Day cards I looked at in May about watching sports? That would be a lot better card for me to buy for my mother than one about makeup and other girly stuff my mom is not into. I guess when it takes an industry until the 1990s to even start producing cards with different ethnicities pictured, it's not surprising that they haven't begun to recognize other areas of diversity among their consumers. But check it out next time you're in a Hallmark, and see if the gender lines aren't a little closer to 1950s definitions than 2003.
Today is Day 6 of the Shazia/Suhail Alleged Apartment Hunt. Exactly 6 days ago, Shazia told me she and her husband were really looking for an apartment to buy and would be moving out once they located one. Now, knowing what I know about Shazia after living with her for 10 months, she could have an apartment in a week and be gone by July, or she could keep saying they are looking and not actually do anything for another year. Hence the "Alleged." I will believe she's moving out when she comes to me and actually says, "I am moving out on ______." But I thought I'd keep you all updated.
