2003-10-13 11:40 PM Sports on Monday Week 7 Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (0) Sports on Monday (Lucky Week 7) is NOT jumping on the Pedro-Bashing Bandwagon after Saturday's bizarre game. Having seen the videotape of Don Zimmer actively seeking out Martinez (who was not even taking part in the brawl at the time but just standing on the side) and then rushing him, I don't think it's fair to act like it's all Pedro's fault Zimmer ended up in the dirt. Just because a guy is 72 years old doesn't mean you have to stand there and take his punishment. Plus, knowing Pedro, if it was anyone BUT Zimmer running at him, he would have thrown a punch. I'm not saying Pedro couldn't have handled the situation a bit better, and he could apologize too, but it's unfair to make him out as if he instigated the whole thing. Moving on to far, far more important, and happy, things .... OK, so obviously you can tell what really had my attention this weekend, huh? I have never seen OU's offense look so good in my life. Although the score was quite similar to our 63-14 shellacking of Texas in 2000, many of our points in that game came off of four interceptions and other turnovers where the defense did the scoring. In this game OU only scored one defensive TD, though the defense was its usual strong self (except for a few big plays put up by Texas freshman QB Vince Young, who scares the heck out of me for next year) and got the ball back when we really needed it, including forcing and recovering a fumble when Texas was on the goal line and still in the game. But the offense was amazing. I'm not sure what the final stats were (stupid ABC sent us to a different feed after 3 quarters, when the score was 51-13) but at one point there was only one drive on which we did NOT score. And for one more year, Texas looks foolish at our hands. Whoo-hoo! Also, you may have noticed the Jets won this weekend. Apparently Herman Edwards sat a lot of the veterans and started a number of rookies, to motivate his team to do better. It worked. The team I saw on Sunday really did seem completely different, even after the veterans got put in. Balls that got dropped the last four weeks were caught, and often run with for an even bigger game. Third downs got converted. Drew Bledsoe is so black and blue from the beating he took from the Jets D, he probably thinks one of those new Lions jerseys has been tattooed on his chest. I'm not quite ready to declare all the Jets' problems behind them, but the team has the same record (1-4) they had this time last year, when they made the playoffs. And Chad Pennington may be back as soon as the 26th. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
