2006-11-29 11:33 AM Waiting Around Post Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (0) I am waiting for my (interim) boss to call so we can have our miniature staff meeting (everyone but Emm and I are out sick). I am also waiting for Sus to come in on Saturday but that's not something for which a blog entry will successfully operate as a time-filler. This is going to be all about a certain television show that I am obsessed with -- if you don't want to read it, you can check out the Wall Street Journal's online analysis of their MLB playoff predictions contest. Interestingly, two of my favorite sports blogs, Deadspin and Batgirl, finished one-two in the professional writer division, both picking the Cardinals to win it all. No wonder they're my favorites.
So Veronica Mars last night was awesome. Not as in-the-moment mind blowing as last year's finale, but really the best episodes of this show are the ones where after the fact your mind keeps picking up on all the seemingly throwaway lines that were actually clues (love that the prison experiment episode was a giant clue in itself, instead of the seemingly random MOTW we all thought at the time). Also, I'm sure Yoda appreciated the "resistance is futile" line. I appreciated that it was said by Mac, reappearing for the first time in over a month. The most enjoyable part of the whole episode was how all Veronica's friends worked together to help catch the rapist in the act -- which belied Logan's breakup assertion that she never asks for help. (I'm pissed at Logan right now, though I get where he's coming from -- I just would never be able to stand a guy wanting to "protect" me. But I do like that he at least recognized that as long as he can't control that impulse, he shouldn't be with Veronica.) Anyway, the most awesome part of the episode was not enjoyable at all, in the emotional sense. I've watched a lot of CSI, Law and Order, etc. through the years and I thought I was more or less immune to all the sordid crimes humans commit against each other, at least as depicted on television. But with just a minimum of actual violence, VM made the horror and viciousness of the act of rape real to me in a way I have never felt just by watching a fictional representation. I was literally shivering for fifteen minutes after the episode ended. And yet I laughed out loud several times in last night's episode as well. This show, I tell you. If you all want in on the emotional roller coaster, the next new episodes (airing in the new year, I'll find out) will begin a new mystery arc -- perfect time to get in on the action.
