Music: Bothy Band TV/Movie: Battlestar Galactica on SciFi Link o' the Day: Pimp, the Backhanding For those keeping track, my leg has been getting better each and every day. I can now climb stairs in an almost-normal fashion, although I still need the support of a handrail or cane. Today I was climbing the stairs to my office and I crossed paths with one of my co-workers. I apologized as I made him wait for me to pass and said, "Just a sec as Sweet Daddy Gimp slides on by." He gives me this sad look, then says, "Oh, John. You don't mean to say that." Huh? I don't play for sympathy. I play for laughs. What's the deal? Then he realizes I don't know what he's talking about, and explains. This co-worker is a two-term Vietnam vet. "Gimp" was an acronym from that time that meant "General Issue Maimed Parapalegic." Who knew? Or better to say, who of my generation knew? So in off-handedly using the term "gimp" to describe my temporary condition, I was belittling a lifelong tragedy of many Vietnam-era vets. I didn't know. My co-worker knew that I didn't know. But now I know, and out of respect for said vets, I'll drop the use of the term gimp and just call myself Hopalong Hoppity. You learn something new every day. * * * Not a lot to write about today. Wet snow on the ground and lots of work piling up here and elsewhere. I have writing projects calling and beckoning like hungry wolves. But one question... why the hell won't they put the Drew Carey Show out on DVD?! * * * Today's link leads to one of the many signs of the disintegration of our culture. I present to you, Pimp, the Backhanding from the folks at White Wolf. Oh yeah. As a society, we're in fine form. Signing off. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
