Woodstock's Blog Books and other stuff I feel like discussing By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat. |

2009-09-10 7:51 AM CooRs Field Nugget Five - update and some goofy stuff Rambler is right, in his comments on the previous entry. The pitcher is Jose Contreras (who is Ruben, I wonder? Must google that name and see what comes up) Pitching on Sept 5, he went 6 1/3 innings, was the winning pitcher of record, with a very respectable ERA of 1.35. Having the excellent Rockies infield right behind you helps any pitcher's stats, but in a park known for the difficulties it creates for pitchers, 1.35 is pretty good, I'd say! He starts again this afternoon. I won a ticket to a game of my choosing by working Fourth of July weekend with no complaints. So I'll be at the game today as a spectator and get to pay close attention to his style on the mound.
We've now taken three of four from Cincinnati, and both the Giants and the Dodgers lost yesterday. We are now four up on the Giants in the wild card standings, and only 2 1/2 back of the Dodgers. We'll play the Giants three times next week - in SF - so that will be one decisive series, the other three decisive games finish off the regular season the first weekend of October in Los Angeles. We've had three walk off wins in the last few weeks. A grand slam homer to win one, a late inning hit with the bases loaded to win another, and last night Seth Smith sent a groundball out to center field with the bases loaded and the Rox trailing by one run in the ninth. Pitcher Jason Marquis had been sent in to run for pinch hitter Jason Giambi (who walked) and Marquis turned on the after burners and made it around from second. Pitcher Jason Hammel - whose ERA is 4.31, started the game, although when the Reds tied things up, he couldn't win. But he struck out 8. I was kind of uneasy, when I saw his name on the board when I came to work, I wasn't filled with confidence, but no worries! And now for the goofy stuff. Just when I think I've encountered every type of situation that could possibly come up - there's another first. I had my first heavy breather on the phone a few nights ago. He began by asking me what kind of lipstick I used, and when I paused wondering if I had heard him correctly (lipstick doesn't come up very often in phone calls at baseball parks) he moved on to more earthy questions. I hung up on him and he didn't call back. One woman called with some fairly typical questions - is such and such a seat likely to be out of the sun? - and moved on to more and more detailed queries, obviously being coached by a man I could hear in the background. When I finally realized that neither she nor he could be completely satisfied by a phone call, I encouraged her to come to the park, and when they got to the concourse, ask an usher for help. Next question - "How do we find the concourse?" Sometimes I feel like my brain has reached a brick wall, and I have absolutely no idea how to scale it. So I backed her up a step. When they enter the gate, ask a staff person for directions to the concourse. I hope they found it! A coworker assisting guests on the gate just outside the office door had this question presented to her: "There's a park around here somewhere with a really long name. Can you tell me how to get there?" A couple of years ago, as the Rockies were on their way to the World Series, I discovered that coming home after a game and sitting down to blog about the results was a help in managing my exhileration (or despair) and calming down to go to sleep. So look, for more updates in this space, Mr W's health permitting! Read/Post Comments (3) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
