By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

Coors Field Nugget Two - Miscellany

We haven't had many unusual evenings at the stadium of late. The team has been on the west coast for six games, back in town tomorrow for one of the longest homestands of the season. Good news and bad news, because going to work gives my days a badly needed structure, and bad news because working evenings puts a kind of unnatural spin on my time. But I am looking forward to being back at work.

Pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez threw the Rockies' first no-hitter back in April, and the lobby memorabilia display case has been updated. Two of the five windows are filled with his uniform, the lineup card presented to the umpires, a bat, a game ball, his shoes and spikes, an empty champagne bottle, etc. He is on track for a record setting year, barring injury. {blogger pauses to touch wood}

After the sudden death of team president Keli McGregor in April, all team personnel wear his initials on their uniforms; game day staff were issued new id's with his intials as part of the logo; and I noticed the other day that his initials are also chalked into the field using team colors, just beside the entwined "C" and "R" behind homeplate. Although I've been aware of a few upper level meetings, to which the limited shareholders were invited; the team has made no public announcement of his successor. Since the Rockies have an established precedent of promoting from within, and indeed, that's how McGregor got his position, most of us expect someone already on the staff to move up. But who will get the nod is still an interesting puzzle.

Pitcher Jason Hammel has somewhat unexpectedly become a dependable starter. Jorge delaRosa is returning from the DL, rookie Chacin is acquitting himself nicely, and thus who will be the five member starting rotation is another topic for lively discussions in the lobby as later innings unwind.

On the evening the Nationals rookie pitcher Strasburg started his first major league game, we kept one lobby TV monitor tuned to the Major League channel. Not everyone understood our interest, and several people passing through the lobby looked at us with blank expressions when we tried to explain. He has a wicked curve. I will be very interested to follow his career.
