2004-02-20 7:28 AM Grabbing the First Shoe Instead of Waiting for It to Drop Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
After my two mechanics classes yesterday, Justin asked to schedule a consultation from 1130am to 12pm today, half of my lunch break and before his own class started (and my real consultation time). I didn’t give him the idea that he could consult during the lull times of the Friday lab session. When he had initially suggested 11am to 12pm, I said that was when I take my meal, and he even hinted on treating me to lunch. If he had insisted, I would have declined all the more on teaching him under those conditions. There were also two other students who said something vaguely about consulting today, but unlike Justin, they did not set a specific time. Since I already scheduled the mechanics long exam, that means that the Young Educators’ Society have only until Friday next week to schedule their tutorial session. I don’t know if they will push through with it, but so far their initial survey of the students have turned up Friday 4-5pm as their most common free time (along with my schedule). If that’s the only time they have I can’t do anything about it, but it seems to be a time destined for most distractions when the students would probably be already thinking about their start-of-the-weekend gimmicks. On a side note, did I mention before that the Y.E.S. gave me (and all the other teachers) a certificate during Teachers’ Day within the Founders’ Week celebration? There were some students who arrived late for my mechanics classes and, when they entered the room, questioned the veracity of the field trip announcement. Is their view of the subject I’m teaching so bad that they can’t believe it could also be fun at the same time? As usual, a couple of students asked if the field trip was required. As with the last several terms, I told them that it was 30 points counted towards their classroom exercises and projects, which means they will have to be assigned an alternative project to get those 30 points. That usually deters them from choosing something that sounds like work over something they know will be fun. Other than that, at 4pm yesterday, there was also a student general assembly to talk about asking for volunteers for the Open Campus and College Fun Day. There were six committees announced in total: games, promotion, documentation, tour and registration, poster and kite making, and orientation program. After the tasks of each committee were enumerated (and the number of volunteers for each announced) the students were asked to approach the wall where the committees were posted and sign their names under the committee/s they wished to join. I’m in charge of the tour and registration committee, which, according to the meeting Ronnie and Maila held during my classes yesterday (and thus did not have my input), needed 8 volunteers. At least 10 (including my cousin and Justin) signed their names there. My cousin also signed up for the games committee under basketball, as did some of the other volunteers. That means they won’t be at the registration desk all day long, and I’ll have to schedule when their individual desk times will be depending on the other activities of the committees they joined. I’ll post more about the event planning and preparations next time. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
