2004-02-21 9:40 AM The Circus That Will Be The Prospective Freshman Orientation Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
To give a better idea about the events suggested for the College Fun Day, I’ll itemize them. There’s a bike race, basketball, volleyball, kick ball, paintball, campus tour, robotics exhibition, kite making and flying contest, a poster making contest, ceramics painting, karaoke and a mini-concert during lunch. The president of the student council, immediately after all of these were announced, said there was too much happening, some at the same time. The organizers backed down and said that depending on the number of participants that show up (I don’t know when they expect the RSVPs to pour in) it could be that some of the events will not have any attendees. That means that there may be less work for all than it seems on the day itself. What they didn’t consider out loud was the possibility that there might be more people arriving than expected. That would mean that at worst all the planned and announced activities would have to push through. In fact, immediately after the signing up, the other committees already had meetings. I wanted to grab the cordless microphone and say that those who wanted to go home already could join my committee because we won’t be meeting until the next day. After the floor was opened to the students to ask questions, Maila noticed that the next three inquiries were about whether their work would be credited in NSTP, P.E. or the subjects of the committee heads. She said she understood where they were coming from, but reminded them that the name of the activity had the word Fun, so that if they did not consider the listed activities as fun, then they should suggest ones that they would enjoy, because after all, the purpose of this is to appeal to the prospective students to enroll here. And what better way to do that than to present a student body that takes pleasure from what the school is offering. The student council president also said that even though there was an air of competition being cultivated for the visitors, he believed that for us hosts, the purpose was to get to know the prospective enrollees and convince those we believe to have the “right potential” to study here. And what’s making it look like a contest? The stamps that both the visitors and the students will try to accumulate for the whole day. In fact, some students asked me if it was possible for them to help organize and play in certain sports. I told them to ask Ronnie because I didn’t know. Of course the big assumption they had for those stamps was that the visitors would be staying the whole day for the whole event. As head of tour and registration, I also have to be able to cater to the needs of those that just drop by for only an hour or so from out of their busy schedule and want to decide in that time whether they want their child to study here. The best thing I can think of for their benefit are short guided walks around the campus set every hour, with a condense spiel than with the large group orientations. I wonder if I have to have the speech approved by the other organizers and the EVP. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
