2005-02-24 5:07 PM Cooperation and Altercations Between the Students Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
My last task for the Open Campus was judging from among the six entries of the on the spot art contest (that started in the central lobby at the same time as the registration). The winning entries will be the ones that will be painted on the walls dividing the quadrangle from the circumferential road. I rated two as being the top entries. The first was a very clean picture of the school building nested in the branches of a tree. The second was not so clean (the crayons were rough, uneven and showing white ridges against the penciled sketch) but it was the overall relevance to the theme that got me (and apparently, some of the other judges). Their drawing showed people working on a large jigsaw puzzle of a healthy cared-for Earth, emphasizing several activities of ecological importance. This is where the long-term goal of transferring that art to the wall came into play. We just had to hope that the artist contracted to do that job would be able to capture the spirit of the original work. Some of the other submissions had a cartoon or anime theme, one of which just showed three men (obviously of different racial descent from the coloring and the hair if not the art) shown from the shoulders up back to back to back. Another was the typical hands clasped surrounded by boughs. There were also some “all-star” and exhibition basketball, volleyball, soccer, table tennis and badminton games. The souvenir for this year was not a card with all the pictures of the batch (and the teachers, of course) but the unique six-decade rosary that had first been promulgated in 2003. Later that evening I heard about an incident with Deiv and two of the older batch of Engineering students that happened after the Robotics exhibit. Deiv was in one corner of the room with his group’s maze traversing robot. On the opposite side of the whiteboard was Percival’s group’s display, the line follower. Obviously that was the only space for them because of the robot soccer fields they used. Percival’s batch mate, Miguel (not enrolled in the same subject), was hanging around with him, writing jokes about his work on the whiteboard. Afterwards, in the central lobby where the art contest was being held, it seems Deiv confronted Miguel about writing something derogatory about him. Miguel denied it, of course. It did not help that Deiv only spoke in English, while Miguel was replying in Filipino. It ended in an attempted eye gouging by Deiv that resulted in scratches below Miguel’s eyes, which I will have to detail tomorrow, as well as what happened next. For now, class dismissed.
