The Modern Fable of the Bullies Against the Nerd

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Back to Deiv vs. Miguel, which happened during the Open Campus: having occurred in the central lobby, some of the participants and observers of the art contest broke up the two.

It was also curious to note that the guard was not there at that time, about which he was reprimanded later.

Another interesting side note is that Miguel’s parents both work in the school. His father is the dentist, and his mother works with the music teachers. When his mother saw his injuries and assumed it was a girl who did it, she just shook her head when they told her the truth.

In the days following the event, Deiv’s mother had already talked to the Director of the Discipline Office on two separate days (can days be NOT separate?).

She denied the allegations supposedly made by Miguel and Percival to her son (which he enumerated as having happened on several instances) about being abnormal and gay. She detailed how he (as well as his father) had a personal laboratory at home, much like certain cartoon characters, where he was free to explore his curiosity about how things work.

It still does not help his case that he should not have acted the way he did, especially on a day when his family was around (speculatively, giving him the courage to address Miguel as he did).

Of course it also does not mean that Miguel and Percival are innocent. It is not out of character for the two to ignore Deiv if he does try to approach them, as he claimed. Deiv exemplified that even though a lot of his batch mates tease him, at least they are civil when he does talk to them about it or other class related questions.

It is also not out of character for the two, normally quiet but still goofy, to become rowdy in the presence of their similarly acting peers.

I am suspecting that Deiv just singled these two (is that possible?) out because they are all Engineering students, and have had a lot of interaction inside as well as outside the classroom.

But it is also possible that even though they had teased him in the past, that this time, in his paranoia, Deiv just thought that when he heard them laughing, it was at him.

I also do not agree with accommodations already planned to cater to Deiv’s “special needs”. He should learn to work well with others (including teachers and our own requirements), and be as sensitive to their emotions as he wants them to be aware of his.

I do not envy the position of Miss Marge the guidance counselor and Sir Ronnie the Director of Student Activities who will have to put the final word on the matter. The recommendation of Sir Percival (yes, more irony) the Head of Security has been a major offense.

But I’m sure that after this, Miguel and Percival would definitely go out of their way to avoid (is that right?) any more confrontation with Deiv.

And I’ll end this narrative at that point. Class dismissed.
