2006-01-06 12:00 PM Not Just About Insistence But Finding The Right Things to Insist On Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. Continuing my discussion about the engineering sophomores yesterday, so now there are more students in that batch who are irregular than those with no failures. This is what has occupied most of my time in academic advising in the past few days: looking for alternative subjects for them. Now to concentrate on Deiv, he already went to see me with a list of all the subjects that according to his flow chart he is now allowed to take, with all of the subjects being offered underlined. The question there was of course whether those subjects were still open and not full, and further along if those subjects are also not in conflict with what are considered his first priority subjects, which are his majors. That is also what consisted of the bulk of his repeated returns to me for consultation, as well as most of the other irregular engineering sophomores. He ended up with eleven units, and twice more he went back to talk to me, trying to insist on taking a career planning offering which is for those who are in their last year of studying. I kept telling him that we had talked about it in the academic advisers’ meeting that this is only supposed to be taken by juniors and seniors. He insisted that the half-unit course, which he saw to not be in conflict with any of his other subjects, would otherwise occupy his large vacant periods. I finally told him that I was only given the authority by the registrar’s office to drop and add the subjects of those who either failed the prerequisite subjects, are in conflict with other subjects, or those sections that have already been closed out. If he wants to insist on taking a course that he is not supposed to take, he should talk to the acting dean about it. That ended our conversation. He’s becoming assertive, but he still lacks the discernment on what he should be assertive about. Session 919 ends here. Class dismissed.
