For Better or Worse, In Sickness and Health, In Honors and Failures

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Once again, I will providing colorful behind the scene commentary behind the story I wrote down for the student version of this online journal.

I was talking about a student who is very smart and determined who celebrated her birthday.

Her escort was her boyfriend for five years, which means that they met while they were still both in high school, and they agreed to go to the same college.

Unfortunately, he doesn't get as many high grades as she does.

In fact, he failed in my general science mechanics course that she got the highest possible grade in.

Maybe it was the fact that they did not take the class together - that she enrolled one term before he did - that is the reason she didn't help him with studying.

Maybe it was his male pride that is keeping him from asking her for help.

I have known situations when the guy gets higher grades than the girl, and expectedly, he always helps her out when they are in the same class, making sure that they sit near each other in exams and all that.

I guess that is an early modern manifestation of the woman waiting patiently in the cave for the man to do all the work hunting for food to put on the table, then sharing in the reward.

On the other hand, a very curious scenario recently cropped up in school.

In their first year in school, K and C (to protect the innocent) were a couple.

For more than two years, they were both in the dean's list, although there were rumors that it was just the guy, K, riding on the girl's coattails, since he was almost always second honor while she was first.

Two terms ago, they broke up, and a second guy, J, entered the picture.

During the first term, it surprised a lot of people to see that K was still in the Dean's list, although with a grade point average of a flat three point oh oh oh.

I don't know how he did for the term that just finished though.

J, though, has gone from being like the first guy I mentioned, to getting lines of threes in his grades.

It could be C's positive influence, but it is just as likely that it is she has been letting him copy from her during exams and assignments.

Now J has computed that he is in the dean's list, and he has been asking the college secretary and us academic advisers about going overload - that is, more than twenty one units - for the third term because of his performance, despite having a GPA in the line of twos during the first term.

He says he just wants to be able to graduate on time - that is, at the same time as C, who is still a regular student after all, and a candidate for cum laude.

Methinks that's a little too much confidence.

Session 921 is all done. Class dismissed.
