Making It Easy For Students Who Arrive On Time - If They Arrive At All

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

The second final exam that I had on the second day of finals week
Was for my general science requirement mechanics lab class. It was at 8 in the morning, but none of the students showed up so I returned to the faculty room until someone arrived looking for me almost half an hour later.

And in the end only four of the students showed up and took the test, where I asked them to discuss the theory, methodology, results, analysis, sources of error and recommendations for all the experiments. Three showed up afterwards (one even got to talk to the test takers) but I told them to return the next morning for the “second batch”.

Any other students would have understood that the coverage would not be the same as the first exam, and I even warned the first batch about this. But I was prepared for some slacker students (especially one who had missed most of the quizzes and failed in the practical exam, not knowing how to use the force table, and that I failed in Graphics Two: Manual Drafting the term before) who would believe otherwise.

Again there were complaints from those who took the test that they were wracking their brains out and getting sore hands from writing about seven experiments, but I was used to that.

In the afternoon of the same day was the finals (first batch again – because of conflicts for some irregular students) for my Introduction to Robotics class.

This time the questions were to draw the basic designs (especially the sensors and the motors) of several robots, then give the detailed program outline. I asked these for three robots: their first project (of which for each group it was different), a track follower robot, and the pushing robot.

As a bonus I also asked them to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their wrestling robot compared to those of the other groups.

The only seating arrangement instruction I had for them was that no two people from the same group (since we were using the tables built for two) could sit together.

Session 1081 missed the first test, and has to return to take the second one. Class dismissed.
