2006-05-09 11:13 PM The Students Should Run the Show Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. So much for getting just a little more vacation time: the Eco Camp started today and will run until Sunday, when I thought it would be three days just like last year's schedule. I didn't know that when they moved it from January to April that that was the least of the changes to be made with the annual event. Now, topmost on my mind right now because of this is the fact that for this camp in particular, the faculty representatives with the students of each school are mixed up along with the students when they are designated groups to avoid clustering of people one is familiar with, and to best get exposure with the other campuses in the part of the system gathered. I do not complain about this. Just as it might be refreshing for the students to be able to get in contact with types of teachers they might not see in the classrooms otherwise, it also might be a refreshing change for the teachers to encounter a new breed of students previously unknown. But when it comes to accomplishing the tasks that the groups of students are assigned, I believe there is a line to be drawn as to how much the faculty included with each group must contribute. If there is a time limit for accomplishment of the designated mission (which is almost always the case) then the faculty can gently remind the students when they are in danger of not finishing the task on time because of their slow paced work. But I believe in no way should the teacher be the main source of the group's work. It makes the students unnecessarily dependent, as well as striking a blow to their ego and dignity with regards to getting a healthy attitude towards achievements. Besides, the teacher has enough time hogging the spotlight during class hours, if he or she is so minded. But it seems that for a few teachers, it for is this additional time centerstage that they join these activities. And that's just sad. Session 1109 hogged the limelight. Class dismissed.
