Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. This is the first entry (for both of my online journals) that is being posted after the closing ceremonies for the Eco Camp have finished. But I won't be critiquing it now or here, but in the other journal as I reach those parts in my detailed discussion in a few days' time (as opposed to the skimming I'm doing right now). Instead I will be writing down some errant thoughts here for now which will be picked up and reorganized for later use in that promised evaluation. First of all, if one of the participating students themselves tells you that she believes one of best things that she can take away from the camp is the friendships that she has made with people from the other schools in the system, then maybe there is a need to reassess the method in which you are trying to accomplish your stated objectives - if, that is, it is not in fact the camaraderie that was mentioned. Second, there is a difference between outdoor learning where the students actually see things first hand instead of being told them in a classroom situation, and bringing the students outside of the classroom but still giving them lectures. One is more effective than the other because no one is droning on in front of them where they have no notebooks on a desk to write down the important details in. Next: passion for a particular goal is not enough. Having the money and the resources to accomplish the goal doesn't fill the entire gap either. The same goes for having a a levy of highly qualified classroom educators on your side. The question is: are you doing anything to determine and make sure that your message sticks in your audience's mind long enough for them to start changing their living habits? I'll stop there for now, and let these serve as teasers for when I talk about the Eco Camp in very painstaking scrutiny. Session 1115 missed the point. Class dismissed.
