Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. Another thing that was brought to the attention of the dean because of a teacher complaining about being overloaded with work is the fact that the faculty manual says that teachers can only be given a maximum of three preparations. There is the option of giving additional compensation for the teachers for the fourth and fifth class preparations, but the Executive Vice President (in our hiring board meeting) said he doesn't want teachers just accepting overload for the extra payment. There is also the technicality that teaching both the lecture and the lab component of the same subject qualifies as only one preparation, despite some protests. So even though a teacher has to have sixteen to eighteen units load to be considered as full load, it may go down to as low as twelve if it involved only three preps. The only way therefore that a teacher can get up to sixteen units is if he or she is given more than one section of the same subject, which only counts also as one preparation. For the subjects, in fact, that count as six hours a week (or even as low as four), having an additional section of the same subject only counts as three units, not four or six. Since one of the teachers discovered this in looking for a legal basis for her complaint about tentatively being given too many subjects for the new term (instead of accepting the overload, for which she would have been compensated for) now the dean has to adjust everyone's load to avoid similar complaints, even though it was no problem before. Because of this, one of the subjects that I will be teaching, which has two laboratory sections, will be given to someone else and not handled by me, so that I don't exceed sixteen units. There will now have to be coordination with that teacher as to the content of our subject. Personally, I would have preferred it if I handled both the lecture and the lab students in a related subject, just as I have for the last three terms, because I can pace both to be more comprehensible and appreciated by the students. Sometimes that can't be accommodated though. Session 1295 is showing to the administration an unwillingness to do more than the job description. Class dismissed.
