Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. I want to go back to talking about a certain student. Maybe the way that we're dealing with him is not the best way to handle the case. I, for one, seem to be of the mindset that he cannot be changed, and thus despite the fact that I keep coming up with preventive rules in my classes (even in the middle of the term) to ward off some of his more predictable acts, I am just subconsciously waiting for the next instance of his outrageous behavior. It is only on the most extreme cases that I reprimand him publicly, when he leaves me no choice but insists on what he wants in front of the other students, which - come to think of it - aren't all that rare. Recently he approached me again while I was in the robotics lab, during a class when he wasn't my student. It was already a dreadful moment just seeing him enter the room, at the same time racking my brain for what he could possibly want. This time it wasn't anything I expected, asking me to help him with his Advanced Mechanics (3) class under another teacher who, in the effort to give him no quarter, has made the class difficult even for the other regular and innocent students. Just to remind him that it wasn't an isolated instance, I prefaced what I said with "just like last time". I have never taught the subject, so I cannot assure him that I can give him answers for all the questions he has. And he seemed to recall that moment in Intermediate Mechanics (2) the term before, where he presented me with several problems from the book, none of which I could give a definite answer on, just "it could be like this, and it could be like that". So this time, instead of insisting, he just thanked me and walked away. During another class under another teacher, I walked into the classroom and joked with one student who asked me for consultation (it was circuits). I outright said his answer was wrong. I passed by this certain student's table on the way out, and he was preparing to ask me something. I cut him off and said I couldn't help him. I'll continue this tale next time. Session 1409 literally never learns. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
