Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. So I was talking about a certain student's continuing antics (again maybe because we're all - his teachers and fellow students alike - just waiting for his next untintentional punchline like a slow moving potential car wreck) when I passed by the Robotics lab during one of their written exams and joked around with another student there who asked me for help. He asked the same thing, standing with arm out already to show me his paper, and I refused. He seemed to have been ready to complain about why I helped his classmate, and I interrupted him again. I said clearly, "I was teasing him. His paper was blank. I didn't even have time to read the question, and I said his answer is wrong." He had sat down again and stared down at the table top before I had finished my declaration. At least it seems he's used to being berated. But he doesn't seem to learn when it comes to being opportunistic when it comes to exam, like brazenly leaving his notebook out and open if there is a proctor (not the regular teacher) during an exam, or even biting when I told the visiting upperclassmen that they could help out the test takers, knowing full well that their answer would be "I'd traumatically blocked all that out of my mind already". It doesn't prevent him from asking the older students anyway, thinking I was serious, or that I would not hold it against him being the only one to take advantage of the daring offer. That's why our new tactic in class, to see if he will take the bait in exchange for a few bonus points, is to talk about some students who have gained pluses because they participated in some of the sports fest games, or in the Talent Quest. Will he go the distance even if it is not academically related? I know some students not as scholastically proficient who do, but for them, they're taking the easier route out. Sometimes I don't know anymore if I'm trying to change his behavior for the better or if I'm just seeing how far (or how low) he will go. Hopefully it's both, but for his benefit.
