Students Who Think They're Getting Away with Something Just Because The Teacher Doesn't Call Them On It

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I have two patience-testing students in one room, what a way for me to start the week.

One of them is Ephraim, who, at the start of the class (just like with every other class) was able to show up in time for the quiz. Since it was the last quiz for this section, I sort of caved in and asked them to list down the materials, which is something they’ve been hoping for since the start of the experiments, and it is what they always memorize from the manual first.

But since Ephraim has taken up the class before, he doesn’t study anymore, relying on his own memory for the answers, especially the materials.

When he doesn’t remember the answers, he goes around the room looking for the answers (first to the back to get the title of the experiment), even going so far as to peek into the technicians’ room to get a look at materials.

That’s when I drew the line and shouted at him if he was taking the quiz or what.

A few minutes later, he was still sitting beside his classmates who had passed their quiz papers.

One of them said he got the last two questions of the quiz right, which meant that he was looking at his manual, when there was someone still answering beside him.

I questioned them about it, and from that point on I just asked the students to borrow the equipment, not anymore talking about how many minutes more until the end of the quiz, since Ephraim was the only one who hadn’t submitted yet.

Later on he left his paper at the desk beside the teacher’s desk, but I didn’t pick it up.

At the same time, a certain student showed up with the new kit he purchased for his Basic Electronics Lab project. He asked me for a copy of the paper, and I said my copy was in the faculty room. He went so far as to ask if he should get it.

I told him to get a copy from his classmates. Same with the materials he needed: a soldering iron and a meter, which he could not borrow from the lab because the technician isn’t there.

So I told him again to borrow from his classmates.

Session 1573 is lost if the teacher’s not there to repeat the instructions. Class dismissed.
