Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. First disciplinary case that I've handled personally as Student Affairs Coordinator today. A student who showed up after lunch to his class with his female "friend" who is not enrolled here. The Discipline Officer asked them if she was a student, because she was wearing a sleeveless upper garment (a violation in itself) so he went up to the Student Center to get the logbook. Unfortunately for the student, the teacher also did not allow sit-ins in her class, so she called his attention, and that's when she noticed the smell of alcohol, which she told the discipline officer on his return, and he was asked to step out. They were in the college faculty room when I showed up, and he said he didn't know the rule about outsiders in the classrooms, and thought he wouldn't be noticable in his condition. Sorry for him, unlike his previous school (he is a transferree who was not able to attend the orientation) the classrooms here are air-conditioned so odors linger in an the enclosed space. And, that already counts as two major offenses on his part, which, the discipline officer said is not yet enough to call in his parents. But one more major offense and he will be suspended, which when we told him is when he sat down (up to that point he was defiantly standing and had his arms crossed) and placed his hands on his head with his elbows on his knees. Talk about complete reversal of body language. It also gave an inkling as to what had happened in his previous school, and from his last question, which was if the offenses will be included in his transcript, that he may be thinking of transferring again. One more thing: he said he didn't think it was good to leave his friend all alone after lunch just so he could attend class. I told him that's exactly why it's not allowed, because either he'd be to preoccupied entertaining the visitor to listen or the rest of the class would be distracted by the new face. Session 2253 was certainly put through the ringer of fire. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
