2009-03-09 2:32 PM A Student Getting Worse Instead of Better with Time Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. A certain student has come into my radar again, this time because of his interaction with one of my co-teachers in the faculty room for one of their subjects. First, he was consulting about one of the assignments given, and the teacher berated him for relying too much on the handouts without even analyzing why some of the steps in the solution are such, which would have a different effect on the computation. He couldn't get it, because he was always concentrating on copying on the board (as usual) and not even listening, and thus only has time to study the notes and handouts after the class. I have taken to not writing the complete notes on the board during my class (or repeating to the students several times what should be written before he arrives in the room) but it's already his fifth year in school and he hasn't learned that the notes, handouts and the slide presentation files copied are not the end-all and be-all of how he's going to pass in the subjects. What's ironic is what he told my co-teacher in response to this: "I'll study the handouts." Can't he get that that's what got him into trouble in the first place? Next thing he told my co-teacher is to tell him when he would have passed enough reports to get a perfect grade. This is in response to some additional requirements they may pass optionally that he's taking advantage of. He thinks because he can't pass by the conventional methods (that is, passing the exams) that he can make up for it with the reports, that he most likely will just copy off the internet anyway, and keep passing until he passes (if that makes sense). What I didn't like is that his tone of voice as he said this was that it's the obligation of the teacher to tell him when he's already done enough; I'd say he has. I can already see the time when he eventually gets to present his final project. I'm sure that he will be complaining to his parents about his teachers not giving him the credit he deserves, and that they will try to intervene. But that's probably another year or two down the line if his current performance has any say about it. Too bad he's not the type who would give up easily on this just because it's taking longer than he or his parents would have expected. Session 2591 would take a slow child. Class dismissed.
