Influence-Ya!

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

And the influence of slacker co-teacher continues, even when he's gone, with the new teachers.

Our board passer from two years ago last Tuesday told me why he wasn't in school last Monday.

It's because he moved his two-unit class so that they will only meet once a week, thus freeing up his Monday.

I know he got this practice from slacker co-teacher. Since they live in roughly the same area, the young teacher would agree that going to school for just one class in one day is a big waste.

But it's not what they signed in the contract, which is forty hours service per week in school.

Up to four hours a week may be spent in class preparation outside the school, but that's less than one day.

Therefore there really is no justification for moving classes so as not to go to school for one day.

The class he wants to move, he says, is all reporting. Given the current schedule, meeting an hour a day twice a week, the reports usually have to be cut short. But if they met once a week at two hours, then the reports would be continuous and not postponed for the next meeting.

What's irritating about this is that he is asking me for advise how he should word his request.

I told him to write it as he said it, but for some strange reason, he wants a shorter explanation.

I answered that if he wants to stick with the brief description, there's a possibility the dean and the director will not understand in the first place and call him back to explain, or worse, write out a longer letter of clarification after all. Worse if they call him separately.

That would mean he has to explain twice. I wonder if that forward-thinking is enough for him.

Maybe it's the generation gap, but this isn't the first time that I'm surprised that he doesn't get something I thought would be obvious (or maybe I'm assuming too much).

Like one time I told him about not being used to the new spreadsheet software version and where all the standard commands I use are, and the need for the keyboard shortcuts to be intuitive.

I was just looking for commiseration. I didn't expect his off-hand reply "You'll get used to it."

Session 2721 sometimes doesn't get it. Sure it's a positive spin, but it shows a bit of insensitivity to the person who is talking. And it somewhat rudely ends the conversation. Class dismissed.
