2009-11-12 12:31 PM Students Demanding More Money Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. Okay, the dean wants a meeting the controller, the head of human resources (who used to be dean of student affairs in another campus) and I to discuss this proposal of the student council for an additional seventy-five pesos to be added to the miscellaneous fees of the students for the third term. Attached to their letter are signatures of students who agreed to their petition, which comprises about thirty-seven point five percent of the college student population that they think is enough to let it run. That is, they believe that it represents enough of the student population for agreed on by the administration. Their reason for asking is that according to them, the five-figure budget they are given for the entire year is not enough. That is why they are asking for more money that will represent an additional sixty percent additional funds. This, they said, is based on a policy they found that organizations (including the student council?) are allowed to ask the students for up to two hundred pesos in membership fees. And since the student council is the ruling class of the entire student body, they can ask this amount indiscriminately. That is one of the questions that need to be answered in this meeting: is the student council an organization? The student organizations, since they are specialized groups, that have to recruit, and the strength of the numbers of their members determines how much they can ask to be in service of the students. Besides that, one of the things that the students are expected to learn besides getting sponsorships to augment their budget is the importance of fundraising: getting something for something. Right now they are just expecting things to be handed to them on a silver platter, by the administration and physical facilities. Also, the claim that their current budget is not enough has to be verified. This falls back to the problem from several years ago of having a student council president considered rich who funded a lot of their activities from his own pocket, and did not particularly care about reimbursement. What valuable life lesson will the students learn from having a rich dad? Whatever it is, it is not something all of them can relate to. And this definitely goes against their having a division of all their expenses from the first term that was submitted to the dean. Add to that the problem right now with asking funds from the organization of parents of college students. Now even parents of student leaders are involved, having been read the letter of the holdover president to another student, and knowing that it does not represent their sentiments wants to do something about it. At least it is not the administration waiting for the turnover to a new government of parents anymore. Session 2865 toes the line of being pro and con student. Class dismissed.
