Your Winners Are Weiners

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Okay, it will be here that I can say the points I wanted to against the company that organized that debate competition. I already wrote some in the student accessible version, but those were only the points that I wanted the students to learn not to repeat in the future.

First of all, even from the slide presentation that they showed, it was obvious that they had a lot of empty seats in whatever school they went to, showing just how not so well received they were.

And these supposed champions really just showed how much they needed the training on good English.

I was cringing when I heard them in their time pressured speeches, which really did not inspire any confidences in the company, especially in their methods of picking champions.

Much more so on the content of their arguments, with the very biased topic of the importance of the use of English in job hunting, although of course concentrating on interviews.

The negative side kept saying it was just one aspect but not the most important one. They said that skill also mattered. Well, any job manual would show you that good communication is only one aspect of being employable, but is it a deal maker or breaker?

Anyway, that is part of the criticism of the students, but it was not their fault why they were there.

It was obvious from the get go that it was purely for the marketing of the company and their services.

I am sure after the free ten day training the students would be made to feel that they do not have enough learned to make them ready, using the evaluation of the company of course.

The fact that one of the speakers, giving a glowing testimonial of what happened to her before, during and after winning the previous leg of the schools and universities caravan, read her speech and pronounced interview inner-view several times left a bad taste in my mouth.

I would believe she had already gone through the whole training gamut of the company, and I was not impressed.

Also, what is with calling the annual event legs? This is the third year, so it is the third leg; ditto with calling it a caravan, as well as calling the contest quote It Is Academic unquote.

Why not just call it English Proficiency challenge? That would be very clear to everyone involved.

And the question is, do you want the students to be able to articulate their own ideas well or to know the right way of thinking first that will make their ideas go over well?

Session 3013 still learned something to avoid. Class dismissed.
