Well, tonight's slam went well. There were twelve of us, and about 50 people in the audience. I came in third. I started off strong, but the judges didn't go for my stuff. Hey 3rd out of 12 ain't bad, but I want to improve. Still waiting to hear from 2 MFA's and also the one with the critical paper pending. I guess I can name names and say the last three are Long Beach with Charles Webb and Gerald Locklin; Florida International with Campbell McGrath and Denise Duhamel; and University of Washington with Linda Bierds, Richard Kenney, Heather McHugh, and Colleen McElroy. Washington is ranked 10 in the US NEWS and World report rankings but that was 5 years ago. FIU and LBSU are new programs. All of these poets are good, although radically different. My friends Keith and Jeff and Megan live in Seattle, and my brother and neice live in Los Angeles, and my cousin lives in Miami(EVERYBODY HAS A COUSIN IN MIAMI- Jimmy Buffet).
I guess if I got an assistantship that would lift one above the other, but I would go to any of the three if I didn't have one. I could always substitute teach or dig ditches. I am currently reading Richard Hugo's The Triggering Town, a collection of essays. He went to UW and studied under Theodore Roethke. If I don't get into either of these three then, I will probably teach high school. Imagine unleashing me on the teenagers of America. They'd throw me out of the country after what I'd teach these young'uns.

Manuel Gonzalez from Albuquerque featured at the slam, and he is a really cool, nice guy, and an Awesome performance poet. He also played three different types of flutes and mixed hiphop into the groove, but he knows his music too. His words melted the air. I bought volume one of his chapbook and will buy vol. 2 if I make it to Minneapolis this August.

Ciao!
