rather than call it a student centered approach I prefer to use a well rounded approach. Some students work better in groups and some prefer to be left alone. Students need a variety of these approaches. Perhaps one day will be a lecture/note taking day. Another day will be a day when we break into groups and assign tasks for each groups. Other days may involve writing, or class discussion, or audio-visual or perhaps all of these methods will be used on the same day. I also believe in bringing my creative personailty into the process. I may use poetry in an argument class. Poetry often reflects current issues that are up for debate. Slam poetry, although not canonized by the academy is often a source of many topical poems that will spur discussion. Also the use of poetry will encourage figurative language in students' own writing. My goal is to engage the students, not entertain them. Still, by allowing myself to be non conventional, I will encourage them to take more risks.
