2006-07-24 12:06 PM Once again, out of the loop Mood: not the greatest of moods Read/Post Comments (2) |
Thanks to Sarah Weinman (link to her blog is above), the Anthony nominations are public; I didn't see anything on the website of bouchercon, nor did I see any email on this, though I try over and over to get on lists for announcements since I post to "Deadline News".. and yeah,it's trivial but I have this sort of vested interest in how Bcon is run and always have an opinion - hard not to once you've been there, and done that, you know?
And once again, I feel weird since yes I did send in a nominating ballot on time and while I didn't keep a copy I'm pretty sure that of ALL the nominees (see http://www.cluelass.com/Guide/Deadline.html), I managed to be almost in total - what - disagreement? - with the field. My nominees coincide with the list in few places: 1) one "best novel" - Laura Lippman's TO THE POWER OF THREE 2) one short story - Barbara Seranella's "Misdirection" which was a kick-ass piece of work 3) one non-fiction book, THE HEIRS OF ANTHONY BOUCHER which frankly interested me so much more than the others in the list. I thought the Kaminksy book surprisingly uninteresting, I don't read most books on "how to write a mystery" and while we have Les Klinger's books and I'm sure they're wonderful they don't interest me so I haven't even opened them. They're Stu's books. I think I might have nominated THE JAMES DEANS as well in best paperback, and probably one or two of the fan publications - like "Mystery News" but nothing else I thought deserved "best of" honors in 2005 made this nomination list either. Not DRIVE by James Sallis which would have been my absolute pick if I'd had to make one, nor CITIZEN VINCE, not FORCING AMARYLLIS, not THIRTY-THREE TEETH or LOCKED ROOMS or FLESHMARKET ALLEY nor even my nominee for "special service to the field - someone I believe is hugely overlooked and deserves the honor without question. It's been over 90 degrees for the last 3 days, our landlady has decided we need a new lease with nothing in it for us and yes, I'm grumpy, sticky and out of sorts. (I know, anyone have any sorts?) I'm also a little concerned that this news did not appear on Bouchercon' own website but was carried into the public view by a fan. NOT that she shouldn ot have - don't get me wrong, I went and posted it immediately upon finding it, but the convnetion's official website should have this information up first. Sorry, guys, but it's true. Read/Post Comments (2) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
