2003-09-15 1:32 PM "Playing Burton" review Mood: Inspired Read/Post Comments (1) |
This past saturday night I witnessed the unbelievable play "Playing Burton" at the Irish Rep theater. Unfortunately, it closed this past weekend...I hope they revive it. The play was about the life of Richard Burton, famous classical actor...probably best known as starring on broadway with Julie Andrews in the musical "Camelot". I made the mistake of sitting in the front row. Being a classical actor myself, you'd think I know better. Anyway, he spit all over me. I actually didn't mind. I was so glued into his story, I just wiped it away and kept staring at him. Anyway, this one man show, performed by Brian Mallon, was an amazing piece of art. I was glued the entire time. It's so great when you see a piece of really good theater...it reassures me anyway that there's not just crap out there. Although there is a lot of crap out there. Brian Mallon just got done touring a one-man show throughout Europe about Welsh poetry. He's probably best known for his role he originated in the movie "Gettysburg" where he play a ...general??? I can't remember the general's name. Clearly, they loved his character so much, they brought him and this general character back and wrote them into the movie "Gods and Generals" (recently released onto video). In any event, I give this play 4 1/2 stars and recommend it highly if it re-opens.
