2006-01-26 12:26 PM Movie Madness (and Badness) okie dokie guys, i've seen a few new flicks.
Cry Wolf: Rated PG and it's easy to see why. if you think in the beginning you've figured it out, but it seems too obvious, don't worry, it is obvious. but really, what can you expect from a movie with Jon Bon Jovi playing a journalism teacher in a private school? the story revolves around several priviledged private school kids who play a lying game amongst themselves. when a "townie" is found murdered, they decide to make up a kind of urban legend concerning the murderer. that leads to lots of misdirection which ends back with the obvious. as writers we know we should show and not tell, also a good rule for movies. unfortunately, this movie tells more than it shows. do not waste your time on this one. yasha gives this no paws up. Mr. and Mrs. Smith: somethings wrong when the two best looking people in the world do a love scene that bores the viewers. another long and laborous movie that falls flat in the end. most if not all of the action doesn't even really happen until the final few minutes of the flick. you know the story, a married couple who (unknowingly) work for rival assasignation firms. when they each, independently discover the truth, they are contracted to kill each other. do yourself a favor and skip this one also. because it does have brad pitt and angelina jolie and therefore is asthetically pleasing, yasha gives this one paw up. Hostel: Yep, the Quentin Tarentino presentation. i'm pretty sure his only affiliation with this movie was in the capacity of executive producer. it's a pretty disturbing movie that will make travelers think twice and even three or four times before venturing into Slavackia (excuse the spelling). i don't want to give away the (thin) plot, but three tourists(two americans, one icelander)are partying hard in amsterdam. one night they meet a man who tells them of a wonderful place in slavackia where the women are beautiful and more than willing to please. if you enjoy feeling stalked and are into torture, you'll love this. not the best pic in the world and it's easy to tell it was a low budget, independent film, but the sheer thought that something like that could indeed happen in the world is unsettling. on a positive note, for once, not being american will not save you from a horrible fate. yasha gives this movie three paws up. Pigs: a foreign film from Poland. apparently the polish like to talk a lot about fucking and women there are only thought of as sexual objects. want to grab a cunt, well, just do it. want to take a high school girl out of school and make her your mistress...more power to ya. this story is about a man who was a part of communist poland's elite (and corrupt) state police force. when communism ends, he takes a job for a lot less money with the new government's police. he is charged with infiltrating a drug cartel, only to find that his ex-collegues are involved. it was difficult to keep up with all the characters and whoever was in charge of the subtitles needs english lessons. the subtitles flashed across the screen so quickly at times, that you couldn't even read them. also a slow and laborous movie. yasha gives it two paws up. well, that's it for now, folks. happy viewing!
