2001-12-27 9:16 AM Kevin Smith, Baby! Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: puzzled It would be the one I haven't seen yet:
I really dig Kevins Smith movies, as much because I used to really be into comics way back when and he constantly referes back to them, but in a way that makes them almost apply to reality. Almost. I've seen three of the four, and of them Dogma is one I enjoy seeing repeatedly. I've only seen Clerks once and I might go for seeing it again because there were parts that I didn't hear or didn't get. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was just awesome because of its work in metafiction. (If that word doesn't make any sense to you, remember that in the movie Ben Affleck played the comic book author *and* himself as two separate roles.) Fucking brilliant if you ask me. And all the charicature roles made it a movie that was super fun. I didn't like Chasing Amy as much, I think because the roles were trying to break out of their charicature assignments and they didn't come out as fully formed as one could hope. So I figure Kevin Smith shouldn't really try to make chick flicks. He's not very good at it. In Dogma about the only realistic person in it was the main protagonist and she was so overwhelmed by the cast of freaks, prophets, angels, muses and other, all she could do was react. Like I said the whole thing was a lot of fun, in no small part because it referenced about a butt ton of Catholic...well...dogma that I only barely remember reading about in booklets my dad has from the church and the rest of it from Neil Gaiman's Sandman. If the Church ever wants to figure out how to get the Good Word out to kids on this jaded, attention-deficit generation, this movie is great place to start. (Another place would be with Neil Gaiman, but that's another entry.) Too bad the higher ups who never deal with kids are too knee-jerked against new ideas, and too bad local folks who do work with kids have been forbidden to watch it. *sigh* But I've never seen Mallrats...So who is Brandi? Okey, I have to get to work... More later. Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
