2012-01-01 8:23 AM What Would Happen If The Moon Spun? Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (2) Any theoretical physicists, amateur or professional who might have an answer to this question is asked to respond. I couldn't find the answer on the Net...
My thoughts are that it may have been treated in some Science Fiction novel that I am not remembering, (although "Wil McCarthy" comes to mind)... Anyway, let's say a force were applied to the moon to spin it on it's axis. I believe that the same face of the moon is always presented to the Earth, so I'm thinking the moon has no spin now? If it began to spin, would it then be a twin planet to Earth rather than a Moon, regardless of size differences, or does that have to do with distances? Would the Moon's orbit change because of the spin mechanics? Would the Earth's orbit about the Sun change? (I.E. "Standing Wave" theory of planetary placements...)... Why is the Moon not spinning now? Was it ever spinning? Would the spin have measurable gravity effects on itself or the Earth or man-made satellites? If a large enough asteroid hit the Moon at exactly the right angle, wouldn't that induce spin? These are questions my brother might have had answers to, but I can no longer hear the answers... In my research, this is the closest I came: http://cs.astronomy.com/asycs/forums/p/24192/331413.aspx Thanks for your help or theory! Read/Post Comments (2) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
