And! How to get more miles out of your miles per gallon! An STMagazine Consumer Watchdog Special Report.!

And now, Kelly Bright!

KB: Good afternoon and welcome to STMagazine.
He’s an enigma, elusive, and a pretty hard nut to crack. He’s the reclusive Douglas Lain, founder of ST and well known writer. Today I’ll share what I found out about the former Mister Big of ST, and what I reveal may surprise and delight you. Here’s this week’s COVER STORY EXCLUSIVE!

KB: He was born on the front steps of Graceland, the fabled home of Elvis Presley, and I guess that means he was born to greatness, he’s reclusive founder of ST, Douglas Lain.
“Doug” Lain, as he’s known to his friends, started his uniquely American life while his family was touring Graceland and soon there after the Lain’s moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in the mile high state of Colorado.
Doug’s friend from those days: “Jerry”.

J: Yes, I knew Douglas. I was a member of his Super Snoopers Club. We would meet and Douglas would shake us down for money. One time we had an election for President of the club. He fixed the election so he could win. we all hated him for that. I hate him.

KB: Soon Lain was on the move again, to Florida, where he attended Eckhart College. Douglas got into the swing of college life pretty quickly and became a local radio disc jockey. “Bill” remembers Lain’s show.

B: I was walking by the building and heard something, I didn’t know what was. And I found out later it was Douglas Lain’s show.

KB: From their it was time to hit the road again, this time to Portland Oregon.
Douglas Lain started a magazine in Portland. A magazine that would , in retrospect, be the blueprint for “ST”. It was called “Diet Soap”.
Sy Gold:

SG: Hi ya kiddies! I worked for Diet Soap. I did the Celebripage. It was a celebrity gossip column thing. Doug was great. Sometimes he would just come around and visit. Those were the early days. Then he stopped.

KB: He stopped, but why? Maybe because he married his childhood sweetheart, Miriam.

J: Yeah, he married Miriam and I was at the wedding. He was nervous. I hated him for that. I hate him.

KB: Doug and Miriam were married for over 7 years and had three children. Business associate and ST contributing editor Jim Farris.

JF: He has the youngest, Baby, and the girl, Little Girl, and the special one, Ben. But Doug’s political activism put a strain on the marriage and jeopardized everything he had built. He lost Diet Soap over his stance on Peruvian wood pulp in the paper. He’s nuts. I hate him.

KB: Then Lain’s fiction started to get published and noticed.
Jim Farris again.

JF: Yeah then he got some little story published about a flying toaster and some space monsters and a few one dimensional women. It was published in Australia, and for some reason it was published in Peoples Bank Books.

Oh, he became high and mighty then.

KB: And then Doug got more deeply involved in politics. Activist Community Liaison, Dave Zinfindel.

DZ: Douglas always seemed so interested in what I was doing. One day I was at home mixing my own shade of ink and preparing for a political meeting when Douglas showed up. I asked him if he wanted to go with me. He said “yes”. So he did. It was obvious the night he started throwing chairs at a Karaoke party that he wasn’t happy at the direction my group was going in, so he quit. I hate him.

KB: Then he founded ST, or in those days “Silly Thinking”. Silly Thinking went through a lot of changes in those days. And when Lain went broke he sold and resold the celebrated netzine several times. Now owned by Bi-central Feed and Grain’s subsidiary “Farristextco” ST is doing fine and even now Doug does a weekly column called Doug’s World”. But his days of moguldom are behind him.

KB: What an interesting and elusive figure. Here’s Sy Gold.

SG: Hi, Kiddies. Today I’m interviewing the star of CBS’ hit sitcom “2 and Half Dads” Charlie Sheen.

CS: Hi, everybody.

SG: The whores are behind you now aren’t they Charlie?

CS: Let me check….

SG: HA HA HA HA HA. Marvelous!

CS: Yeah I got a great wife and everything’s good.

SG: And a hit show on CBS.

CS: Yeah, I’m very fortunate.

SG: You bet your ass! Kelly.

KB: Interesting as always Sy. And now a few gas saving tips from STConsumer Watch. Here’s Dr. David Goodman.

DDG: Thanks Kelly. Hi again everybody. Want to squeeze every penny out of your car’s gas tank?
Here are a few tips:
Work from, or just stay, home.
When running errands, make a list and arrange your stops close to one another.
Kelly.
