Knox, Meditation and Mental Prayer; I John (trans.); various journal articles } My boss, who's some such of a psycho major, perhaps even a master of the science, today exercised his mangerial-fu, and his shrinkology in a handy package by defining stress: "Responsibility without control. That's the definition of stress. That's why you're, well, stressed out." In about 5 minutes he'd turned an ill, pissed-off co-worker, into an ill, calmer, more normal co-worker who could pass the buck back to where it belongs. Which was duly done, and all the relevant people had to make the decisions which they supposedly get paid the big bucks for. I confess, it made me see the value of managerial competence, the very existence of which I have been generally dubious. Granted, this managerial moment was brought to you by other people not doing their jobs, but still... |
