2009-09-21 6:51 PM Trip to the Yucatan Day 2: Chichen Itza On Monday, we spent the day at Chichen Itza. The beginning of the day was brutally hot, but as the time pressed on... the skies darkened....
Something new that I didn't see last year (because it only started 6 weeks ago!) is a new archeological excavation beside the Temple of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza. Inside the giant temple pictured above is exact replica of the same temple... yes, it's just that cool. The new dig though has discovered that beneath the ground, the structure appears to CONTINUE! So they are trying to uncover it delicately.
We toured the immense Ball Court at Chichen Itza and it makes Theresa look even tinier... look for the tiny little blip of orange in the center of the photo.
The weather didn't cooperate with us and the sun was missing for the equinox event. However, my newly acquired tripod allowed us to snap a nice a little pic of us.
A light and sound show is available at Chichen Itza. The place is COMPLETELY pitch black except for the illuminated structures. This photo took a 10 SECOND LONG exposure to collect enough light.
