2007-08-28 1:54 PM More on obesity. I love this topic.
I saw a show last night on the heaviest man alive. He was half a ton. His story? He lived in Mexico and moved to the States to find work. He acquired a stationery job and worked next to a pizza parlor. When he returned to Mexico he was five hundred pounds. I do not believe for a second this is some kind of addiction that is beyond control. I've spent the last four years working in the food industry and I have seen what people eat. In our society, the answer to every ailment is to swallow some pill or enter some sort of rehabilitation center. The problem with this is that it teaches people that they are not responsible for their actions. It's ok if you drink and beat your wife, smoke crack, gamble, and max out your credit card, because there's something wrong with you and you can't help it. It's ok if you can't pay attention in class because you have ADHD and therefore need medicine. Our legal system helps to relinquish even more responsibility from citizens. (Remember when a woman sued McDonald's for being too fat?) I am a psychology minor and I recognize that people really do have problems, but when a quarter of our nation's children are overweight it is time to acknowledge that our way of life is seriously flawed. Kids born today actually have a lower life expectancy than that of their parents. The rate of overweight people in this country is unprecedented and there have been turbulent times all throughout history. I won't apologize for my harsh opinions. I don't think all heavy people are evil. I just don't sympathize for those unwilling to help themselves. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
