Yesterday was the hottest day of the summer so far: I saw "102 F" on one of the bank marquees I passed while zipping around from errand to errand.

When not plastering herself against me (she's been a touch clingy lately), the dog sensibly parked herself over her favorite a/c grate:

A couple nights ago, I received a note from Eileen about the chained hay(na)ku anthology going on sale; it contains three poems I co-wrote with my friends Neal Jettpace and Donna Carter several years ago. Coincidentally, I'd taken a meander earlier that evening through a couple of books I'd agreed to review for Eileen:

She's keen on encouraging non-poets to review for GR, by the way. To quote from her introduction to issue 14:

GR would love to hear more non-poets' views on the poems being written today. C'mon, Peeps -- send your, uh, dentists, plumbers, masseuses (especially masseuses!), UPS or Fedex delivery people, etc. over to me! As regards poetry, I believe everyone's opinions can be worthwhile!

The list of books available for review (deadline Nov. 1) is here.

I spent a solid chunk of my morning researching the folks on today's ballot:

I don't have anything kind or worthwhile to say about the election itself, but there were a handful of familiar faces at the precinct (where I was the fail-safe official for years), and it was nice to visit with them. Then I made the mistake of trying to run an errand downtown -- what with the ongoing rat's nest of construction and a sudden mess of traffic lights knocked out by this afternoon's storms, I ended up with zero idea of how the hell to get to where I'd planned to go. So I'll have to try again some other time. In the meantime, the piles of paperwork aren't merely beckoning, they're making a right unholy din (especially considering they're technically silent and inanimate stacks of matter. But most of you know of what I speak -- especially you other business owners with taxes due, yes?). Off to joust some more with the lot.
