I didn't get a chance to mention, but there is a possibility of an internship on the horizon for me in the next quarter. I showed my proto-portfolio to the dir. of Gr. Des. yesterday. I had gone in there to try and get some freelance work. But once she started going through it, she said things like: - your sure you don't want to go on for the bachlors? (your work is as good as a ba's right now) - you should really do an internship. I've got tons available at the moment, more than I have students applying. - if you went on the the ba, you'd be able to get into the Design Studio, which is AIP's in-house design studio that does work for real firms around pittsburgh. - i will call you tomorrow. So, she didn't actually call me today, but jeezus i was impressed with her offer. The downside of course is there is very little money in it, but for the contacts alone it is worth it. Oh yah and one other thing she said: - if the intership goes well, often the design firm will offer a permenant position to the student immediately. gah! Ah! Job! So, needless to say, I'm going to work as hard as I can to get an internship, even if it means I have to rearrange my schedule at work to fit it in. If it does actually lead to a job, even if it is a pay cut (probably) I will take it in a heart beat. As always, I'm a bit worried about leaving the current job in the lurch, but then my brain points out - there are 5 million people in pittsburgh who could do your job. You are disposable.
