Mood:
Excited

I don't usually get *excited* about something, but I think we got a winner here with this most recent internship interview. I talked this morning with VWA and they seem to have many more things that I'm looking than the uss group. Lets go to the scorecard:

Type of Studio
VWA: Design House
USS: Corp. Creative Dept

Environment
VWA: Reminisent of the 1870's, refurbed historical building with wood cubicals and a working fireplace in the conference room. (no joke) G4's abound, but also printing resources and stockphoto books.

USS: Reminisient of the 1970's, high security to get in, cheap metal desks and non ergnomic chairs once you are inside. They have all the good toys though - nice color printer, nice lg size printer, laminator, video studio, etc.

Culture
VWA: Started by 3 male designers a decade or so ago, it has a faint wiff of "old boys" about it's business practice, but I think thats left over from working in Pgh, like the wood molding is left over from the original building. I also noticed what might be a wiff of "issues" with the web team, but I could be mistaken. It will lead to entertaining staff meetings in any case.

USS: Started over 100 years ago, USS not only has its own Creative Department, it has its own Medical Department run by the HR department. (no joke) Surprisingly, there is no "old boys" feel, but rather a "no one really understands what we do here in the creative department." Nothing brings a team together like being under fire.

My Job Function
VWA: Gopher for designers and basic lacky

USS: Photo archivist and basic lacky

My Experience
VWA: I expect to walk away with really good practical knowledge of how to get things printed, and how to get things to web designers. Though they are not the *bleeding edge* of design, they seem to be comfortable with their clients and majority in the pgh design arena. It will also help with making the decision if a design house is the way I want to go. Not to mention help get started on freelancing by understanding the business.

USS: I expect to walk away with a really good knowledge of the history of USS, get to know some really nice people (all interverts from what I can gather) and maybe do a little bit of design. I'd also get to look over the shoulder of corporate designers, and work with other medias like web and video.

Compensation
VWA: $5 in lunch money. (no joke) About 10 hours a week.

USS: $13+ an hour for 20 hours a week and a cool security pass to the uss building.

Ideally of course I would just take both, but I'm not sure about the noncompete situation, so I'm going to run it by my art dir person and see what she thinks. Also - I don't want to be the internship "hog" since there really are starving artists at this school who could use the paying job.
