in praise of the dilettante

"Begin more projects than you can possibly finish." --Sark

This is pretty much me lately. I have not felt disciplined enough to write anything of substance (including this blog--yes, you need not read anymore--hey, I just saved you a bunch of time!). And I'm letting that be OK. Have been flitting around with other creative pursuits. I have a knitted tote bag in the washing machine right now, felting away. The transformation is so cool! It went in big and rough and woolly, and through the hot water and agitation is getting fuzzy and dense. I ran it through once and am giving it another whirl. I guess I might be overdoing it and could end up messing it up. Oh well.

And I'm sure there?s something sermonic about hot water and agitation making something stronger and more solid?...

Most of the time I think that dabbling through life is a nice way to go--creative projects always cooking, lots of energy flowing--but sometimes the "J" in me starts to go nuts, and I never get really great at any one thing. I do a little of this, a little of that. Keeps life interesting, and if I can be considered an artist at all, well then my life is my art, not just my writing or just my knitting or just my whatever. Dabbling is a way of letting life be integrated. Floating from one thing to the next, you don't become a slave to any one thing.

But of course you never master any one thing either. Also picked up the guitar for the first time in months the other day. Our Saturday night service is having an open mic of sorts this weekend and I said I'd do a song. Mind you, as a guitarist I am mediocre at best. I never learned bar chords. This is the way I am. I don't want to learn the guitar, I want to play the guitar. So I taught myself enough to play some of my favorite songs, then I hit a wall, but I never felt motivated to climb the wall, because I can have fun enough on this side of it. But it does get frustrating sometimes. I end up sounding like this.

I have also gotten into watching the Democratic National Convention. My sister-in-law once gave me a book on personality types that correspond to the different goddess archetypes from Greek mythology. Watching the DNC nurtures the Athena in me, as does going to our denomination's General Assembly. Power is a fascinating topic and one that sits very uncomfortably with most women.

...Hey! I just found a link to Athena that says that, besides being the goddess of wisdom and crafts (who knew), she is also connected to a woman's identity as father's daughter. Well, I guess that is a blog for another time, having lost my father 18 months ago. Whoa. 18 months ago tomorrow.

Kinda creeps up on ya.
