Still hot, but I "cheated" and went the OPAC (other people's air conditioning) route this afternoon and rented a couple of hours from PJ's. A cup of very good iced coffee and a large chocolate chip cookie sustained me while I did some household bookkeeping work.
(Totally unrelated: can you think of an English word that has three consecutive double letters in it?) Other than that, an IUD. (Why do you think I call this My Incredibly Unremarkable Life?) I put the possum/raccoon kibble out on the front porch, but it's a bit early for them to appear. When I'm done here I'll also toss out the raccoon biscuits. They go on the patio. Weather is definitely warming up around here. It doesn't get nearly as hot as when we lived in Abilene Texas and the outdoor thermometer read 120F one day. Granted it was partially in the sun, and probably got heat reflected off the metal siding, but still . . . That high temperature occurred about 6 or 7 months after the same thermometer had read -47F when we were still in Wyoming. The Saints are raffling off one of the team's extra Superbowl rings to raise money for the many families whose means of livlihood has (only temporarily, we hope) disappeared. Oil is appearing on Mississippi and Alabama beaches now, and will no doubt extend to Florida. So much for tourism. When I stopped at WalMart I spotted a motorized cart by a handicapped parking spot. I took the spot--and the cart. When I came out I was still using the cart, and just as I started unloading the stuff into my car another car pulled into an adjacent spot and "volunteered" to take the cart back in. Sometimes I get lucky that way too. WalMart didn't used to let the motorized carts out of the store, but they do now, and very seldom do the cart-retrival kids "have" to go get them. Usually another eligible person grabs it and brings it in. Tomorrow will probably be another scorcher, so I shouldn't stay up too late if I want to get an early start before it gets disgustingly hot. Today's Word A Day is auctorial. It means "of or relating to an author." Its origins go back (in a convoluted path) to auctor--which goes back to the Latin meaning "to promote" or "to increase."
