Teaching As A Career-Sundae Topper

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Yesterday afternoon there was a teaching demo for an applicant to the school of engineering.

Just like most of the others, this one has been an industry practitioner for several years, but lives nearby, making it easy for her to go here immediately after her work then go home afterwards.

She is aiming for just a part time position, of course, and believes that after at least a decade in the industry, that they want a little change which could be provided by teachings a few hours a week.

It's also not the first time that I've heard someone say during an application interview that they want to be able to teach the students something that they actually need in their work, instead of complaining about some minor subject requirement.

Basically in my evaluation I said that I would hire her because the students really do need more exposure to the world outside the campus, and they have to be prepared for the demands of their potential employers. After all, during one of the recent college recruitment fairs that I went to, this is one of the selling points of one institute that attended.

They said their faculty are not life long teachers, but have actual industry experience.

When we are talking about technical topics, after all, or highly evolving fields like computer languages, I also would not trust to learn from someone who has been solely in the teaching profession for years.

Well, if she does get hired, which is likely due to the need, then that means we're back to breaking even in terms of having enough faculty to teach the engineering courses, since there is one regular part-time teacher (even though that sounds contradictory) who will not be taking any subjects next term.

@@ Not enough time for the badminton varsity debacle again, but I don't have all the details yet, so I can't give the full story.

Besides, I'm also thinking if I should write about it in the student-accessible version.

Session 1763 should not be looking to ideally at the kind of students they will be handling. Class dismissed.
