Academic/Personal: The More Things Stay the Same

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I was talking about the meeting with the present dean where he talked about his reasons for not extending until the end of the school year.

There was one person who asked if the dean would reconsider if they came up with a petition or something, someone who, in this time of "crisis" still managed to alienate some of the full-time faculty members present by talking elitistically about approaching some of his co-faculty, particularly those who are already permanent or will be permanent (although how does he even know who's up for permanency).

The dean answered that that kind of "if you go, we go" kind of threatening group, which is also a cause of more divisiveness, is exactly what he wants to avoid by not saying it's a "conflict" of management, thinking of the school in the long run.

Afterwards I learned that that teacher actually planned with other teachers to speak out about what they want during that time, and that they were disappointed that others didn't follow their lead to persuade the dean to stay.

From what I heard of those who didn't speak up, they didn't see any use for it given the dean's answers were non-ambiguous about his stand.

When at the end of the meeting it became apparent that the dean really will not reconsider, the dean himself said it was close to time of adjournment, that is when the kiss-asses (more than those who begged him not to leave) spoke about thanking him for personal and professional opportunities he had given them.

My take on the whole thing (which I reflected in one of the quotes in my post to the student accessible edition yesterday) is that these people do not want the status quo to change, even though we are all supposed to know that we are still in the process of creating a better teaching and working environment, which will definitely not have the same lack of bureaucracy and privileges we do right now such as being able to complain and suggest directly to the administrators.

Session 2057 wants things to stay as they are, at the risk of stagnation. Class dismissed.
