Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. There's something to be learned about employee behavior in an industry wherein day-to-day success is measured by how much business comes in the door. After a day of no sales, the employees will think that something in the outlay (or "Feng Shui") of the place of business has to be changed, even though it's not logical. There were days of high revenue before that, using the old position of things, so that can't be the reason why there was a sudden decline in business. It is, most likely, lack of promotion or publicity, often cured by giving out flyers or adding to the store's visibility, as well as giving the best service possible so that the recommendations would fly left and right from previous customers. But an employer cannot afford to deny the employees their little foibles as long as it doesn't impede sales. @@ There is also the delicate line to think about when it becomes necessary to reprimand workers. It should not be done too often, because that will give the people an idea that the boss finds them completely worthless, unlearning and un-adapting to change. It also shouldn't be too seldom, because there is a part of the employees that knows if they were the boss some of the things that they themselves want to do will not be tolerated, and therefore that would also make them lose respect for the employer. There are, after all, several ways of getting the message across to the people what the boss wants to do or happen without trampling on their self esteem. @@ Another interesting line that is approached (or crossed) is about deciding whether or not to accept money from clients who are in a morally-gray line of work. We're talking about cockfighting here, a form of gambling. That's where they get their earnings. But they're willing to throw their money around when they win, as for them it's a form of good luck to spread the fortune around, and you happen to be part of the windfall. Session 2623 is not making enough every month to be able to turn down cash from any source right now; besides, better to accept now and turn down later than the other way around. Class dismissed.
